Pillow talk: 5 tips on designing a bedroom for a good night’s sleep

While a bedroom can act as a library, office or reading room, in the end, it is a sanctuary for sleep. This space should envelop you in relaxation and comfort, so that can lay back and relax after a hard day’s work. As top providers of bedroom furniture in Malta, the team at Carmelo Delia shares a few tips on how you can turn the most personal space in your home into a tranquil, sleep-inducing oasis.

1. Turn off the lights

Darkness is one of the most important conditions needed for a good night’s sleep. Modern devices such as digital clocks, televisions or computers can disrupt the dark-light cycle that our body’s natural circadian rhythm leans towards, as well as REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Try to reduce as many of these gadgets as possible in your bedroom, and if possible, keep your phone in a bedside-table drawer. Hanging blackout curtains are also a great way of blocking out light at night, causing sleep to become less elusive.

2. Choose the right mattress, pillows and sheets

Your bedding should be comfortable and based on personal preferences and sleeping habits, such as your typical sleeping position or how soft and firm you prefer your mattress to be. Some people even sleep with a full-body pillow while their partner is away, while others place a cervical neck roll in their pillowcase to support their neck.

3. Infuse your bedroom with soothing scents

Lavender is a well-known essential oil that can slow down your heartbeat and relax muscles, inducing a deeper night’s sleep. Sprinkle a few drops on your pillow in the evening or spray it in the form of pillow mist for an authentic aromatherapy experience. Other scents that have similar properties include Sandalwood, Valerian Root and Frankincense.

4. Select soothing colours

A combination of blues, greens and pastels makes for a peaceful and calming colour palette – use brighter colours as accent hues within artworks or on your pillow.

5. Create a relaxing soundscape

Nowadays, there are plenty of sound apps that you can download to your phone that can help to induce and restful night of sleep. However, as we’ve mentioned above, phones and technology can actually be disruptive, so it might be worth investing in a sound machine. Consider sounds of rainfall, white noise or crashing waves that are sure to lull you off to dreamland.
